Solanaceae

Nightshade family (Solanaceae)

The nightshade family is a plant family that comprises around 90 genera and over 2,700 species worldwide. They are particularly well known for economically and culturally important plants such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, tobacco and cannabis.

Characteristics:
Solanaceae are mostly herbaceous plants, some are also shrubs or small trees. They are often characterized by five-petalled flowers with fused petals, and many species produce alkaloid substances, some of which are highly potent or even poisonous.

Cannabis as a nightshade plant:
Cannabis (hemp) belongs to the nightshade family and is particularly well known for its psychoactive and medicinal properties. The plant has aromatic resins that contain cannabinoids such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). Cannabis is cultivated worldwide both as a useful plant for fibers and seeds and as a medicinal and stimulant.

Significance:
Nightshade plants have a great influence on nutrition, medicine and culture. While many species are edible and nutritious, cannabis contains a variety of bioactive substances that are used medicinally and discussed socially.
